Last night I was chatting with my sister in law, a Last night I was chatting with my sister in law, and we were talking about how much time is spent in the kitchen. Prepping, cooking, and the subsequent cleanup. And then your kids start baking and cooking and it’s like clean up times a million.. ask me how I know ;) And then she said to me “I believe the best way to nurture your family is by nourishing them through food”… and I guess I know this and probably say things along this line all the time, but the way she said it really struck a chord in me. 

We only have one shot with our kids. And nobody said it would be easy. Cooking real food requires preparation and thought and it does take effort. But I’d encourage you to see this as one of the most loving things you can do for them. Teaching your kids the basics of cooking and baking is a life skill that will never leave them and will  create a ripple impact on the future generation. As much as we can, we have to get away from the idea that we don’t have time to cook anymore. This is so so important. And if this feels overwhelming and like you don’t know where to start, just make small changes. Find 3 simple recipes you can make and cycle through them. Start with family dinners. Slowly make the changes. Your meals don’t have to be fancy, complicated or time consuming. Let’s get back to the basics. No food fears or worries, simply wholesome meals on the table 🫶🏼

Let’s talk about copper and fertility for a minu Let’s talk about copper and fertility for a minute. This is a big topic — reminder this is an educational post and not medical advice. Reproductive health is just as important for men as it is for women. Bio available copper plays a very important role in healthy development of sperm as well as protecting the egg cell from oxidative damage (think RUST), as well as ensuring ovulation takes place. Remember, a mature egg has 600,000 mitochondria, which means it’s an energy making machine. Without copper, energy production in the mitochondria is stunted. 

Got a low libido? I’d look into your copper/iron balance because this is a major contributor. If you’re like me, you want to take matters into your own hands, and be empowered to support your reproductive health. Start by supporting healthy metabolism through iron detoxification and improved ceruloplasmin function via copper and retinol. This is where the RCP shines as the protocol is designed to do exactly this. Further information on supporting female fertility coming up later this week. For now, here are some details on male fertility:

“Sperm motility is dependent on aerobic energy metabolism, of which the apparent rate-limiting step of the mitochondrial respiratory chain is catalyzed by Cytochrome C (copper dependent)

“Male patients with diseases related to iron overload present with substantial oxidative damage to the spermatozoa, worsened by reduced antioxidant concentrations. The lack of vitamin E and C is commonly observed in such patients [136]. Iron overload and a subsequent free radical formation is ultimately detrimental to the testicular structure [134].”

Sometimes I feel like a broken record. But I mean what I say when I say that the root cause protocol can help you bring regulation to absolutely every area of your health!! Pregnancy and the root cause protocol! Okay I ha Pregnancy and the root cause protocol! 

Okay I have lots to say here. First of all is the absolute importance of magnesium and copper to ensure healthy cell division, replication and iron transfer to the baby. During pregnancy, the uterus is in a “hypoxia state”, meaning it’s a low oxygen environment. This makes magnesium essential for ensuring cell division and proliferation occur as they should. 

Prepping for pregnancy involves adequate magnesium, nutrients from food and stress management. Getting out of fight/flight is especially important to signal the body that it’s safe to reproduce. 

There are so many studies that show how minerals build up in the amniotic fluid as pregnancy progresses. 

Here’s one: (AF= amniotic fluid) “It is known that the absorption of copper rises during pregnancy due to the increasing need for maternal copper-containing enzymes, and copper is also critical in fetal development [1]. In this study, we observed the positive correlations between copper concentration in AF and fetal biometric parameters. Similar concentrations of copper in the AF of women of similar age and in similar weeks of pregnancy have been reported by other authors [14]. The increase in the level of copper and other minerals in AF as pregnancy progressed was also observed in experimental models in pigs [15]. Because AF is swallowed by the fetus, Richards [15] suggested that this fluid may be an important source of copper for fetal nutrition. Increases in copper concentration in AF may reflect an increasing level of this mineral in the mother's blood during pregnancy” . The tables in this study are fascinating and I’ll link to it in my stories. 

Nourishment should be top of mind for pregnant women, the new mama, or women who are preparing to conceive. Focus on whole foods rich in minerals, vitamins, enzymes, bio available fat, protein, and quality carbohydrates. Think: eggs, raw dairy, organ meats, fresh fruits, seafood, whole grains. I don’t ever recommend a “multi vitamin prenatal” as (shocking) most of them contain way too much iron, synthetic vitamin D, ascorbic acid and even fluoride.

At the end of the day, we are what we think and what we think will manifest in our life. As long as we are stuck in stress mode, it may not even worth taking supplements because these emotions carry a charge and influence our cells. Unhappy cells won't be as readily able to take in the nourishment we are trying to give them. As we read above, the gut is SENSITIVE to emotions.

We have to get out of fight or flight in order to truly heal. If we are constantly battling anxiety and obsessive thinking, this is a signal that our nervous system is in stress mode. This doesn’t happen automatically. It takes work, patience, mind management tools, boundaries and a very objective, loving approach. I'm currently loving Dr. Caroline Leaf's Neurocycle app for mind management and I've found it has helped me to see once stressful situations in a new light. It has helped me to re-conceptualize many things from my past that have been triggering for me as an adult. How amazing to have the tools to deal with toxic thinking and know what to do with them.
